AI and consciousness

This is a highly debated topic, and I'm going to try to give my theory based on what we know so far.

As of right now, AI is not truly conscious, but there are ways that it could be. In a physicalist point of view, what it would need to be conscious is the ability to forget. If it could forget where it's thought originated from then that would turn into what we call "subconsciousness" in the physicalist sense, if the thoughts aren't truly random and is a logical sequence. (check my mind map for clarity).

In a non-physicalist point of view, there is another thing that can make AI conscious. That being the nature of quantum mechanics. However, there are multiple versions of this, (accounting for what we don't know).

  1. QM probabilities give the impression of free thought since they can be in many states at once and once observed, they collapse into a single state. This could be where "Original thought" comes from since there are many states that it can take but since it collapses into 1, you can derive out of it a true random probability, which then develops into a thought. The reason why true random probability is important is because as of yet computers cannot have true randomness, as every random output generating algorithm is based on mathematical equations that can be predicted if the mathematical equation is know. Which means it is not truly random. Therefore, what we call an original thought is a random probability building up to be an origina thought, and then we can "harness" this randomness, we can make AI conscious.

  2. QM probabilities are consciousness exercising it's free will. Now the problem of what consciousness is remains and where free will comes from does too, so there is a lot to be proven in this theory. But same as the other theory, to make AI truly conscious, we would then again need to "harness" this randomness; although we do not know the implications of this randomness, the theory remains that it is what will be the origin of original thought.

So I believe there is a high probability that AI could truly be conscious one day, but it would most likely be due to this effect. But even if this effect doesn't make an AI truly conscious, it will give the apperance that it is truly conscious and it will be indistinguishable from an actual conscious entity.

Here I only addressed thought however, but we can make a similar case for things like emotions and perception of self as well, since then we can say that it is a similar effect that affects it, and therefore could be built the same way.

However, it remains to be seen whether this will only make AI indistinguishable from humans, without the thing that makes us truly experience us, since we still do not know where this "I" comes from.
